“Call of the Coast: Art Colonies of New England”
The Greenwich Historical Society will sponsor a day of sunlit coastal views at the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, Connecticut on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. The trip will feature a curator-led tour of Call of the Coast: Art Colonies of New England, featuring 73 works drawn from the collections of the Portland Museum and the Florence Griswold Museum. These works chronicle the development of the Connecticut Impressionist and Modernist Maine art movements as seen through the eyes of nationally recognized artists (Edward Hopper, Childe Hassam, Robert Henri and George Bellows, among others) who captured the character of New England coast art colonies from Cos Cob and Old Lyme, Connecticut, to Monhegan and Ogunquit, Maine.
After the tour, participants will enjoy a buffet lunch at the museum’s Marshfield House and have time to visit the museum galleries, store and historic house before departing.
Space is limited, and prepaid registration is required by January 5, 2010. Cost is $70 for Greenwich Historical Society members and $80 for nonmembers. The bus will depart Greenwich Historical Society, 39 Strickland Road, Cos Cob at 8:30 a.m. and returns to Cos Cob at 3:30 p.m. Register online at www.hstg.org or call 203.869.6899, ext. 10.
