Reclaimed: Paintings from the Collection of Jacques Goudstikker Opens to the Public This Weekend, May 10th - Sept 7th, 2008

Greenwich, CT
203-869-6786
Museum

The Bruce Museum is assembling an exhibition of rarely seen Old Master and other paintings drawn from the collection of Jacques Goudstikker, who was the preeminent dealer of Old Master paintings in Amsterdam prior to World War II. Tragically, he died in an accident while escaping the Nazi invasion. Only recently have his heirs been able to reclaim from the Dutch government 200 of the approximately 1,400 works of art that he was forced to leave behind at his gallery and that were subsequently looted by Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering. Approximately thirty-five of the finest works have been selected for an international touring exhibition that will showcase the discerning eye of Jacques Goudstikker and emphasize the importance of both the artworks and their historic restitution to the family. In 2009, the exhibition will travel to The Jewish Museum in New York, NY. The exhibition is supported by LexisNexis Group, U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management, the Charles M. and Deborah G. Royce Exhibition Fund, and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Phenomenal Weather

Greenwich, CT
203-869-6786
Museum

Coming March 8, 2008, through November 30, 2008, Phenomenal Weather is a family-friendly exhibition that showcases the astounding variety of weather events that take place around the globe and explores the subject through interactive displays, objects and images.
Approximately eight hands-on displays invite visitors to better understand weather phenomena - from the extreme to the everyday - and the science behind them.

Hurl a hurricane toward North America in the computer activity “Create-a-cane”

See and hear a real tornado in a mock storm-chasing vehicle

Learn how weather is a response to heat imbalances created by the energy of the sun

Watch a lab-created snowflake grow.

Try to split light into a rainbow of colors using prisms and mirrors

Learn about cloud patterns and then test your skills in forecasting the weather

Geological specimens are testaments to the forcefulness of weather events and their continuity through the history of the planet. The show includes unusual objects such as

A Connecticut Valley rock formation that preserves raindrop impressions along with dinosaur tracks

Fulgurites - tubes of fused sand and dirt created by lightning strikes

Rocks from Mount Tambora, site of the 1815 eruption in Indonesia that caused the “year without a summer

Different cultures have produced myths in attempts to explain, predict or control the weather. Ethnological artifacts in the exhibition include

A bronze Zeus hurling a lightning bolt

A clay head of the Aztec rain god Tlaloc

Bruce Museum’s groundhog mount representing Candlemas Day, also known as Groundhog Day

Historic meteorological instruments in the exhibition document the expansion of scientific observations of the weather to better understand and predict it.

Air temperature, pressure and relative humidity data are fundamental observations acquired through thermometers, barometers and hygrometers.

A U.S. Army Signal Corps thermograph is an instrument designed to provide a continuous record of temperature data

Lenders to the exhibition include the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University, the American Museum of Natural History, Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, Harvard Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, University Corporation for Atmospheric Research and private collectors.

The exhibition is supported by the Charles M. and Deborah G. Yet its origin and history are often overlooked.

A Taste for Chocolate explores the varied uses of cacao over the centuries and the cultural influence of chocolate on society. These items are drawn from the Bruce Museum collection, private collectors, and institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, American Museum of Natural History, New York Botanical Garden, Gardiner Museum in Toronto, and Wilbur Chocolate’s Americana Museum in Lititz, Pennsylvania.

The exhibition is supported by the Charles M. and Deborah G. How the design repertory is transcribed from one medium to another offers visual testimony to both the inventive spirit of the Chinese mind and insistence on the continuity of cultural meaning. Organized by guest curator Karen Hayward, a consultant in the Chinese decorative arts. The exhibition is supported by the Charles M. and Deborah G. Royce Exhibition Fund.

Click on blog title or calendar link for location details and to see calendar of other events.
