Paintings, prints, sculpture and video by Theresa Chong, William Holton, Katherine Jackson, Jaanika Peerna & Suikang Zhao.
www.mirandafinearts.com

William’s Picks!!

Bill Jensen- "Duo Duo and Drunken Brush Drawings"
Danese Gallery
www.danese.com
535 West 24th Street
thru March 28th
This extraordinary show of paintings on paper made in Sienna and black and white drawings should not be missed. The strikingly colorful Sienna works were made employing Jensen's hand-made pigment with egg and oil tempera technique and display his mastery of gestural painting influenced by nature-the Tuscan landscape and light here. The "Drunken Brush" drawings display Jensen's deep interest in Chinese landscape painting and poetry. The show seems too crowded (more space for each piece would have been nice) but sustained looking at individual works is highly rewarding.

THOMAS NOZKOWSKI: PAINTINGS
Fisher Landau Center for Art
www.flcart.org
38-27 30th Street, Long Island City
The website doesn't mention how long it's up but just opened and probably a month or two
There is also an excellent photography show on the 2nd floor (including William Eggleston, Susan Derges, Ed Ruscha, Rodney Graham, Shirin Neshat and more). Admission is free to the center-definitely worth the trip

A mini retrospective of Nozkowski's diminutive, seemingly simple but uncannily powerful paintings range from his first show in 1979 to recent years. To me Nozkowski is one of the best painters working today-a true "painter's painter". He has the ability to transform the very basics of formalism-line, edge, texture, color, and shape into works that draw you in and entrance you.

Chris Martin
Mitchell-Innes & Nash
www.miandn.com
534 West 26th Street
thru March 1st
This show is not to be missed as well. Martin's work brings playfulness and sincerity to painting that is rare and much needed in painting today. Like Nozkowski and Jensen, two of his many influences (others include Yayoi Kusama, Alfred Jensen, Forest Bess, Myron Stout, Albert Pinkham Ryder, and Thornton Dial), Martin investigates the basics of painting-color, form and texture in a unique way that employs collage and text as well. Each piece has its own resonance, with the feel of being made very quickly and surely or worked on over years (which he often does). His paintings make you smile or even laugh (in the best sense of the word-a laughter of recognition) and I think that’s a great thing for current painting.

It's Gouache & Gouache Only
Jeff Bailey Gallery & Andrea Meislin Gallery
www.baileygallery.com, www.andreameislin.com
511 W 25th St, #207, 526 West 26th Street, Suite 214
thru March 15th
This is a large group show of works employing the ancient medium of gouache and has many standout pieces. Artists include Kay Rosen, Thomas Nozkowski, James Siena, Dike Blair, Judith Linhares, Bruce Pearson, Amy Sillman, Fred Tomaselli, Barbara Takenaga, Julie Gross and Steve diBenedetto as well as many lesser known but excellent artists. The influence of Nozkowski on younger artists is evident here.

Patricia’s Additions….

Ciao Guo-Qiang at The Solomon R Guggenheim Museum
www.guggenheim.org/exhibitions/exhibition_pages/cai.html
thru May 28.
I am scooping William in mentioning this show since he hasn’t seen it yet, but I know he will agree. This exhibit is complex and amazing, even with all its spectacle. I loved it. Don’t listen to Roberta Smith…..

Ana Mendieta at Galerie Lelong
www.galerielelong.com
thru March 1

Juan Usle at Cheim & Read
www.cheimread.com
thru March 15
Interesting group of work.

Michal Rovner at Pacewildenstein
www.pacewildenstein.com
thru March 15.
Not her best but I do love her ideas…

Shi Guorui at Chinese Contemporary
www.chinesecontemporary.com
thru February 28
Interesting Camera Obscura Photos
Cities of Peace at St. Peter’s Church, CitiCorp Building
www.efiaf.org
thru March 10
