Comically awkward on land. Marvelously graceful under water. Give your heart to a colony of African penguins, waddling and swimming in an outdoor exhibit, offering views above and below the water. Included with Aquarium admission.

Instead of frosty Antarctica, this penguin species is native to the southwestern coast of South Africa and well-adapted to warm summer temperatures, like those in Norwalk. Those cute, pink “eyebrows” on an African penguin are actually featherless patches with lots of blood vessels underneath. When a penguin gets too hot, these patches get brighter as the animal circulates blood there to dissipate heat.

Jack Schneider, the Aquarium’s curator of animals, said the African penguins are an excellent complement to The Maritime Aquarium’s other current special exhibit, “African Underwater Safari,” which showcases some of the lesser-known but equally fascinating aquatic animals of Africa.

“Educating visitors on where penguins live is one of the first basic goals of the exhibit,” Schneider said. “None of them live at the North Pole, or anywhere near Eskimos or polar bears. Some species do live in Antarctica. But many penguins can be found in warmer climates of the southern hemisphere, like our African penguins in South Africa and several species that live up the western coast of South America, all the way to the equator and the Galapagos Islands.”

Schneider said the African penguins – whose conservation status is listed as vulnerable – help call attention to Africa’s troubled coastal environments, which receive far less protection than the continent’s inland savannahs, plains and jungles.

“African Underwater Safari”

Special exhibit open daily through June 2010.

Explore the aquatic wonders of Africa and discover how the continent’s fish – though much different from those in Long Island Sound – face similar environmental challenges.

See amazing fish from the Nile River, the lakes of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, the Red Sea and Africa’s shorelines, including the remarkable ecosystem of Madagascar.

Species highlighted include exotic air-breathing lungfish that can survive for a year if their waterhole goes dry, and electric catfish that use bioelectric radar to sense surroundings and zap their food in a dark and murky habitat. Other exotics include knifefish, bichirs and – appropriately for Africa – elephant-nose fish. Colorful cichlids and coral reef species shine in shimmering rainbows.

Interspersed throughout are important messages about animal adaptations, the importance of habitat preservation and conservation, and stories that show how fish from the other side of the world face challenges similar to those in Long Island Sound. Sponsored by Bank of America and included with Aquarium admission.

In The IMAX Movie Theater

Connecticut’s largest IMAX theater, with a screen that’s six stories high and eight stories wide. For the latest movie schedule, call, go online or text “TMA IMAX” to 71297.

Daily March 19 – June 24, 2010:

“Hubble”

At 11 a.m. and 1 & 3 p.m. daily. Her talk, titled “Mount St. Helens: A Tale of Three Decades,” is the final lecture in the Bruce Museum’s 2009-2010 Science Lecture Series on Explosive Volcanoes.
Admission to the lecture is $5 at the door and free to Museum members and students with identification. To explore the impact of this eruption on northwest culture, Prof. Cashman places responses to this event within the broader context of oral traditions related to volcanic eruptions. To examine the importance of this eruption for the field of volcanology, she reviews what we have learned from studying the cataclysmic eruption of May 18, 1980, the subsequent eruptions in 1980-1986, and the renewal of activity between 2004 and 2008. Individual studies are used to illustrate the importance of eruptive activity at Mount St. Helens for our current understanding of how volcanoes work and how best to monitor their behavior.

Prof. Cashman is currently the Chair of the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Oregon, where she has been a professor for the past 19 years. Prior to that, she was a professor at Princeton University. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Middlebury College, received a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue her Master’s degree at Victoria University in New Zealand, and earned her doctorate from The Johns Hopkins University. She has published extensively on her research into volcanology, geologic hazards, and the physical mechanisms of volcanic eruptions and lava flow.
March at Betteridge

Greenwich, CT
000-000-0000
Store

Who Knew a Prehistoric Fossil Could Look So Hip?

These playful mammoth ivory hoops with bold gold stud detailing, are at once graceful and sinuous in their delicate curvature and smooth polish, and yet also raw, edgy, and ever so slightly off-kilter. A mix of contrasting elements, these beauties can be worn equally well with a pair of jeans during the day, or a little black dress at night.

Verdura's glamorous design aesthetic is never compromised in this thoroughly modern take on the ever-hip hoop earring. Who else but Verdura could turn a pre-historic fossil into a wearable (and affordable!) piece of art?

- Brooke Betteridge

Verdura Mammoth Ivory Hoop Earrings, $3,500

Signature of the Season - Boucheron Fan-link Bracelet

With a strong upturn in demand for rare and beautiful objects, both the Miami and Palm Beach jewelry shows turned in strong results, and once again the search for unusual items (whatever the value) is becoming increasingly difficult.

This diamond and gem-set bracelet by Boucheron fills all the criteria coveted by the most demanding buyer. Designed in the early 1950's, there is a lingering retro style, but with a light fluid look that could only fit Boucheron's chic and stylish design.

In 1958, Frederick Boucheron started his business, and quickly it became one of the world's foremost jewelry houses. Consistently producing new and modern creations of the times, combined with outstanding craftsmanship, there is no better jeweler than this for the most sophisticated collectors.

- Simon Teakle

Boucheron Diamond, Sapphire & Ruby Fan-Link Bracelet
$29,000

Vaid Jewelry Captures Spring Colors in Captivating Designs

Vaid, a relative newcomer to Betteridge, is a Rome-based artisan jeweler with extensive experience in exquisite craftsmanship. Daniele Valabrega, third generation owner, has always been inspired to create classic designs using only the finest quality materials.

The Bon Bon collection featured here includes surprising and delightful combinations of Nature’s most precious elements, including hand hammered gold, diamonds, amethysts, rock crystal, mother of pearl, coral, turquoise and lapis lazuli – resulting in a rainbow of color and luminescence that can only be found at the height of spring!

- Lexy Tanner

Vaid Bon Bon Bracelets, from $6,000

The Chronomat B01 Transforms Breitling’s Flagship Line

For many years, the Chronomat has been the iconic flagship watch for Breitling and has worn – pardon the pun – many faces and has undergone many "Evolutions". In its latest guise, the Breitling Chronomat has transformed into the Chronomat B01.

With its streamlined case and modified integral style rider tabs, the B01 is somewhat of a departure for the brand; it has a retro 70's feel with astronaut style font on the bezel. However, all of the classic traits of Breitling aviation remain: readability with either bold roman numerals or stick markers on the dial, contrast with dial color and glare-proofing on both sides of the scratch resistant crystal, plus an easily utilized rotating bezel and pusher functions for the chronograph.

The most noteworthy feature of the B01, however, is internal: the movement is extraordinary and manufactured entirely by Breitling.

- Mike Manjos

Breitling Chronomat B01
stainless steel with “Blackeye Blue” dial
$6,550

Crazy Terry's Auction & Horse-Swapping Parlor

Lately, we've been buying and selling like madmen, while much of the jewelry world has been subdued. Even at the shows we attend in Europe, Asia and all over the US, we've stood out for being wildly busy while other dealers looked on wondering why their booths resembled ghost towns.

The difference is that we go further a field to make markets than any other dealer and we know what things are worth. This means that Simon and I can feel comfortable buying, even in a difficult economic environment. We have the tightest margins that we have ever had in our history, but so long as we keep making markets and stay busy as the dickens, it makes for a great business plan.

Most importantly, for you, it means a constant bombardment of new and exceptional watches, jewels and precious odds & ends, of all ages and kinds. It's a lot of fun.

All the best, to the curious and the collector- come on down!

- Terry Betteridge

Palm Beach Events in March
Nicholas Varney: March 15 – 18
Nicholas Varney, recognized for exquisite one-of-a kind jewelry, presents his unique collection in our Palm Beach store.

Simon Teakle: March 23 – 24
Simon Teakle, Director of Estate Jewelry, and former head of Jewelry at Christies, will be visiting to supplement our estate buying staff. This is the first in a series featuring local artists who will carry on the tradition of the artist colony that flourished at the Historical Society’s Bush-Holley House over a century ago. Dixon's exhibition "Stitches in Our Time" highlights her embroideries and complements the historic quilt exhibition "A Stitch in Time" in the main gallery. The artist's embroidered collages combine stitchery with contemporary found papers, fabrics and objects. Her themes range from the Greenwich landscape to cultures abroad and represent a modern counterpoint to the historic quilts on display in the main gallery.

According to Carol Dixon, "I create art because I love to do it, even when struggles are involved. I have been drawing, painting, sculpting, taking photographs and experimenting with mixed media since I was a child. I like to think that the child in me still appears in the art I do – along with more experience soul, feeling, intelligence and wit – expressed through color, texture, shape, and composition.”

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Ms. Dixon has lived and worked in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, since 1972. She currently offers studio art courses at the Greenwich Art Society Studio School and through Stamford's Adult Education Program. Ms. Dixon chaired the History Department at Greenwich Academy for sixteen years and the Arts Department prior to that. Her education includes an M.A. in history from Columbia University and a B.A. from Vassar College, Phi Beta Kappa. She has served as guest lecturer, workshop leader, curator, and juror for many area art and educational organizations and is a past president of the Greenwich Arts Society. She currently serves as Program Chair for the Art Society of Old Greenwich and is a board member of the Greenwich Historical Society.

Greenwich Community Artists Series featuring

Carol Nipomnich Dixon: Stitches in Our Time

Greenwich Historical Society Museum Store

39 Strickland Road

Cos Cos, CT

Open Wednesday–Sunday, Noon–4:00 pm,

Closed Monday and Tuesday

Free admission to museum store only

Admission to A Stitch in Time: Quilts from the Collection: Adults: $10, seniors and students $8.
Greenwich Historical Society Kicks Off Community Artists Series

Greenwich, CT
203-869-6899
Museum

On March 3, The Greenwich Historical Society will launch the Community Artists Series, a program that will offer Greenwich artists a new venue to display and sell their work at the Greenwich Historical Society Museum Shop.
The Historical Society will invite artists who work in a variety of media to highlight examples of their work that complement themes of its rotating exhibitions. The Society’s upcoming major exhibition, A Stitch in Time: Quilts from the Collection (March 3 – June 13, 2010), will feature rarely seen quilts made by women from Greenwich during the 1800s. Carol Nipomnich Dixon, the first local artist to exhibit from March 3 through April 27, 2010, creates vibrant and intricate landscapes and abstract motifs featuring embroidery. Her work could easily be considered a modern extension of the tradition of needlework that is the focus of A Stitch in Time.

Art has always been a major theme for the Greenwich Historical Society, whose Bush-Holley House in Cos Cob was a cradle for American Impressionism and the inspiration for many prominent American artists. Commenting enthusiastically on the new program, Executive Director Debra Mecky noted, “Greenwich has a rich artistic heritage. It seems only fitting that the Greenwich Historical Society should promote the legacy of the Cos Cob Art Colony that flourished on our site by supporting and encouraging today’s community artists.”

For more details on A Stitch in Time: Quilts from the Collection, the Community Artists Series,” and all related programs, go to www.hstg.org or call 203-869-6899, Ext. 10.

A Stitch in Time is largely funded by the Coby Foundation, which underwrites projects in the textile and needle arts field for nonprofit organizations.

Greenwich Historical Society Community Artists Series

Greenwich Historical Society Museum Shop

39 Strickland Road

Cos Cob, CT

Gallery Hours: Thursday through Sunday, noon to 4:00 pm.
