It isn't. Heart disease is the leading cause of death of American women.”

At Town Hall, the Division of Family Health will offer blood pressure screenings from 10:30am until 1:30pm at Town Hall. As well, red dress pins and literature about women’s heart health will be distributed; and for those who are wearing red, they are eligible to enter for a chance to win seafood cookbooks filled with heart-healthy recipes.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The most common heart disease in the United States is coronary heart disease, which often appears as a heart attack. In 2010, an estimated 785,000 Americans will have a heart attack for the first time and about 470,000 will have a second attack. This means that every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event and about one every minute someone will die from one.

Adapting a healthy diet and lifestyle along with controlling blood pressure and cholesterol are valuable tools to fight heart disease. Women should talk to their doctors about heart disease risk factors and to take action to prevent or control these risk factors. Most women fail to make the connection between risk factors, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and their personal risk of developing heart disease. Since 1979, the death rate for heart disease in men has declined steadily (by 17%), while the death rate for women has only declined by 1.5%. Further, women are more likely than men to die within a year of having an initial heart attack.

The American Heart Association sponsors national Wear Red Day. For more information about Women’s Heart Health and National Wear Red Day, call 203-622-7857 at the Greenwich Department of Health or online at www.greenwichct.org or www.goredforwomen.org.
